Lighthouse
The Ponce de Leon Inlet Light Station, which replaced the old lighthouse that had been built in 1835 and fell into the inlet in 1836, was completed in 1887. It was constructed at the time when the area was called Mosquito Inlet. It is today one of the most well-preserved light stations in America, thanks to decades of restoration work by the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse Preservation Association.
This lighthouse is visited by more than 80,000 people every year. It was designated a National Historic Landmark (1998). The museum and lighthouse tower are 12 miles (19 kilometers) south of Daytona Beach. They are open year-round. The Ponce Inlet Lighthouse, which is Florida’s tallest, is also the second-tallest lighthouse. The tower is 175 feet tall (53m) and offers a panoramic view of the Florida coast and Halifax River, from Daytona Beach to New Smyrna Beach.
The lighthouse museum is located in the former dwellings of lighthouse keepers, as well as other historical light station buildings, and features exhibits about lighthouse life, Fresnel lens restoration and lighthouse history, Daytona Beach, Florida history, shipwrecks, and lighthouse life.
